Jus another building, jus another picture

22mm :: f 5.6 :: 1/1000s :: Aperture AE :: ISO 400 :: Fuji Finepix S5000

Murali's comment to my last pic made me wonder if I was being too hard on myself. I expect each pic I take to be ultra-cool, oozing elegance, blah, blah. Perhaps, I am trying to think and act like this really cool, pro photographer when I am not one. I am now contemplating forcing myself to post at least a pic a week, irrespective of how honestly crappy the picture looks. At least that way, I keep my blog alive and I might give myself the chance to learn as I post. But mind you, I am only contemplating. And thats something that I can do for a long time without getting anywhere.

Rambling apart, this pic was taken more than 2 years ago as I was walking through Atlanta downtown. I've looked at it more than a dozen times since then, but it never caught my eye. After Murali's gentle nudge, I went back trying to sift through my older pics, this time looking for something especially ordinary. And this caught my eye.

After removing some fill light and adding a touch of warmth, I think it looks really decent. I like the simple, strong lines, leading your eyes to a confluence at the zenith. Though the zenith might be too high in the frame. Another thought worth a few words is that once you start touching up pictures, there seem to be mindboggling possibilities. Even if you restrict yourself to just minor, sedate touch-ups. Different roads that might take you different places, not all of them completely disagreeable. Potential posts, perhaps. So, I guess I owe Murali one. Thanks, dude.

Machi, thanks yellam balama irruku, okay okay ... just kidding da. This picture is awesome, did you add some glow too ??

By the way, I learnt a technique recently to make an asymetrical structure into beautiful symmetrical structure. It involves selecting one half of the 'nice' part of the image, making a copy of it and then flipping the copy in the horizontal direction and then some stitching and healing at the seam. It works really well for tall buildings, I guess in this picture of yours the left half (front facing) if mirrored and put on the right and some skew adjustment would make this picture stunning.

Incidently, I tried this technique on a picture that I took in Atlanta too ;) here are the results

Usually, creations that artistes/writers/photographers/etc relish are not always the creations the common audience relish. Important it is, to spawn creations (in your case, pics) that are a little (or sometimes a little more!) abstract inasmuch as it is to have creations (in your case pics) that are tangible and mundane. Of course, it depends on how specific and specialised you want to get, but if you continually want to allure readers to keep returning to your blog, then I think, you must think about the diaspora of audience that visit your site. Do some basic mental statistical analysis to make sure all sorts of audience are happy at the end of the day/week/month (depending on how often you post :) ).

Murali,

illa da, no glow. there was too much blue in it... so increased the reds / yellows.

i am not sure i understood how that building pic is an example of what u said. i though u said u made something symmetric ... but that building aint so.

Anon,
I dont know for sure if you're the same anon from the previous post, but if you are, then please do keep coming back. Comments like these seem to make my day.

Well, point taken. I guess that if i have a blog, and I post on it, I do it as much for the visitors' sake as for mine. Also, I post only so that visitors will see it and keep coming back. Will keep that in mind ;)
