Sloss furnaces is a photographer's delight. Full of dark nooks, slivers of light, hollows, great backdrops, menacing towers, this place in the morning can send a photographer into a click-frenzy. Picking my way through the debris-littered grounds, I was watchful for snakes, rather than ghosts. And then this guy walked up and started a conversation. In 30 seconds, I realised what a great godsend it was. Finding a worker dressed in overalls in a deserted, dilapidated steel furnace. Perfect for the 'jus-out-of-the-30s' look.
Stuck in a narrow alley that lacked the visual depth, I was desperately looking for a good backdrop. And then I realized that the only direction that would give the eye some freedom was... up! Shot this photo lying amidst steel scrap, twisted rails and deserted coal carts.
